I have mentioned before that my mom (“M4P Mom”), regularly calls with ideas for the blog.  Unfortunately, she has more ideas than we have time.  What we really need are some Minions to keep up.  (Where are Bob, Kevin, and Stewart when we need them?) 

So we have to prioritize – and doing these Lightsaber Hilt Napkin Rings were a no-brainer.  I think this is one of the coolest things we have done in a long time, here at May the Fourth Central.

We have 2 versions:

1. The PVC pipe version (shown in this post),  which will require a little more time, and a trip to Home Depot (this is a modified version of M4P Mom’s idea).
2. The original,  simple version suggested by my mom.  This one you can do with your kids, with supplies you probably already have at home.  You can find that post here.

Needed:

• 1″ PVC Pipe (fyi, you measure the inside of the pipe)
  For Kylo Ren’s lightsaber: 1″ PVC Pipe, 1″ PVC Pipe Cross Connector, + short piece of 0.75″ PVC pipe to put inside to connect the two 1″ pieces)
• PVC Pipe Cutter, or Miter Box and Saw
• Sand Paper
• Grey Primer Spray Paint
• Silver Spray Paint (Black for Kylo Ren)
• Black Electrical Tape
• Silver, Gold, Black and Red Duct Tape
• Black Sharpie
• X-acto Knife
• Scissors
• C Through Ruler
• Self-healing Cutting Mat
• 1-Hole Punch
• Green, Blue, Red and/or Purple 2-Ply Square Dinner Napkins

How To:

     

• Cut the PVC pipe into 4.5″ pieces.
• Sand the cut edges to smooth any sharp parts.
• Wipe clean with wet cloth.  Let dry.
• (For Kylo Ren’s, connect the 3 PVC pipe pieces.)
• Stand hilts up on end,  spray paint with grey primer.  Let dry. 
• Turn to other side.  Repeat.
• Spray with silver paint (black for Kylo Ren). Let dry. 
• Turn to other side.  Repeat.
• Cut buttons, and strips out of the tape.
• Decorate hilts with electrical and Duct tape.

Napkin Folding:

• Open up the napkin to a large square (diamond).
• Fold bottom corner up to about 3/4. (for Darth Maul’s skip this step)
• Starting on one of the side corners, roll into a tight tube.
• Insert into lightsaber hilt, and shake around a bit until the napkin tube expands enough to fit snuggly into the hilt.

      

Tips:

• We used a hole punch for the buttons.  And trust me, Duct tape is MUCH easier to cut with a hole punch than electrical tape.
• Using an X-acto knife, cutting mat and a C-through ruler to cut, saves the time of having to measure everything when cutting – it will make your life A LOT easier!  Absolutely worth the investment if you do a lot of crafts.
