Today, we are doing a simpler version of the Lightsaber Hilt Napkin Rings. This easier version requires less time, less mess, and less sharp tools… but is just as much fun to make…maybe even more so. ‘Cuz who doesn’t enjoy doing crafts with paper towel rolls and Duct tape 🙂
In case you missed last week’s post, we made 2 versions:
- The original, simple version suggested by my mom. This one you can do with your kids, with supplies you probably already have at home.
- The PVC pipe version (posted last week), which will require a little more time, and a trip to Home Depot (this is a modified version of M4P Mom’s idea).
Needed:
- Papertowel Rolls
- Silver, Gold, Black and Red Duct Tape
(or Aluminum Foil instead of silver Duct tape) - Black Electrical Tape
- Black Sharpie
- X-acto Knife
- Scissors
- C Through Ruler
- Self-healing Cutting Mat
- 1-Hole Punch
- Green, Blue, Red and/or Purple 2-Ply Square Dinner Napkins
How To:
- Cut the paper towel roll into 4.5″ long pieces. (A toiletpaper roll is actually the perfect size, but you know, it has been in the bathroom.)
- Cover in Duct tape
- Cut buttons, and strips out of the tape.
- Decorate hilts with electrical and Duct tape.
- For Kylo Ren, a bit of additional tinkering is required. You’ll also need to cut the 2 pieces for the “guard”, and cut a hole in the hilt so you napkin can be pulled through.
Napkin Folding:
- Open up the napkin to a large square (diamond).
- Make an accordion-fold bottom corner up to about 1/2.
- Fold in half.
- Starting on the long side, roll into a loose tube.
- Insert into lightsaber hilt, and shake around a bit until the napkin tube expands enough to fit snuggly into the hilt.
Tips:
- We used a hole punch for the buttons. And trust me, Duct tape is MUCH easier to cut with a hole punch than electrical tape.
- Using an X-acto knife, cutting mat and a C-through ruler to cut, saves the time of having to measure everything when cutting – it will make your life A LOT easier! Absolutely worth the investment if you do a lot of crafts.
- Try this with Aluminum foil instead of Duct tape! Works great if you have young kids who want to help out.

Left to right: PVC pipe with spray paint and tape, paper towel roll with Duct tape, paper towel with Aluminum foil and tape (made by #1), paper towel roll with Aluminum foil and tape (made by my 4 yr old son)

Thank you so much!!!! This was such a nice project because everyone could make their own. Me, my 9 yr old (#1) and my 4 yr old, all made our own versions. And everyone was happy with the result! Often with crafts someone gets frustrated because it is too easy or too hard.
