At last count our family had about a dozen or so of various inexpensive lightsabers, 1 of the mid-grade, and 3 of the high-end ones (OK, full disclosure, those last 3 are not the kids’…). You wouldn’t think we needed more. However, none of them worked for the General Grievous Halloween costume we did last year (instructions to come soon!). We needed smaller, lighter, and continually glowing – so we had to get creative. These are kid-sized, inexpensive, glow in the dark, AND they are pretty whackable (won’t break, or hurt you too badly when you get hit in the knees). That’s a pretty hard combo to beat! Top that off with being super simple to make, so the kids can do most of the work.

The green lightsaber works especially well for a toddler/pre-schooler dressed up as Yoda – it is light and easy to hold, and just the right size.
Needed:
- Fubble Bubble Wand (they come in a few different size, we prefer the smaller ones)
- Gray Primer Spray Paint
(optional)
- Silver Spray Paint
- Thick Glow Stick in corresponding color (Buy these at a Dollar store! Make sure it fits though, glow sticks come in many, many different sizes!)
- Black Electrical Tape
or Black Sharpie
How To:
- Pour the bubble solution into a different container, and save it for future use.
- Remove the stickers if you want (though we ended spray painting right over them).
- Separate all parts, rinse and let dry thoroughly. (Use hair dryer when in a pinch for time!)
- Put the bubble stick back in the hilt, to use as a hook for hanging when painting.
- Hang outside, and cover anything nearby that you do not want to be colored silver.
- Optional: Spray thoroughly with primer. Let dry.
- Spray with silver paint. Let dry.
- Take inside, and take out the bubble stick. You can keep it if you want to have the lightsabers double as bubble sabers.
- Optional: Add some black detail to the hilt with a sharpie or black electrical tape.
- Place a glow stick inside, close and don’t forget to move all your breakables! (for less destructive foam lightsabers, click here)
