At barely 2, our daughter was invited to her very first dress-up princess birthday party. Obviously she had to go as Princess Leia. Luckily for me, she didn’t know what a Disney princess was yet, so there were no objections. Now of course Princess Leia IS a Disney princess, so parents don’t have to feel guilty amusing themselves at the expense of their young children’s happiness… This costume was the first one I made by hand. Due to poor time management, I only had an afternoon to do the whole thing (the party was that evening). So it was a mad dash to JoAnn’s, then a flurry of fabric and yarn flying for the next few hours.

For generations, the lightsaber has been know across the galaxies as the weapon of heroes. Elegant, swift, lightweight and very effective in the right hands. One could assume such a design would never be improved upon. However, with version 2.0 we have added an amazing new feature! Now you do not have to cry if it gets wet from a spilled Banta milk, or wipe off all that Tauntaun spit. It is perfectly safe if you plan on visiting Otoh Gunga. The new and improved Lightsaber 2.0 is waterproof and, it floats!

Yoda is just over 2 feet. I am almost 6 feet. He also has some 850+ years on me, so I don’t really look much like the Master. But just like him, I do make a mean rootleaf stew, I have rebellious Padowans that I am trying to guide into responsible Jedis, and I’d like to think that I am wise…ish. So, this Yoda hat has become my favorite. It is warm and cozy for cold Halloween nights; fun, convenient and out-of-the-way while dong M4P prep; and always an ice breaker when the kids have costumed events at school. In geeky good fun, it all is!

Bantha Milk

Today, I learned a new phrase (from wookieepedia) that I think I will use often:
Blue Milk Run.

It is used when explaining something that should be super simple. Bantha milk was easily available all over the galaxy, and going to pick some up was never a problem, so among military personnel the phrase came to mean an easy mission. Kyle Katarn tells Jaden Korr about the Mission to Tatooine: This should be a total blue milk run, kid. But it’ll give you a chance to pick up some negotiating skills. Let’s head to Tatooine.

Who Shot First? (DIY Han Solo Costume)

When our daughter wanted to be Chewie for Halloween, our son simply had to be Han Solo. Proportionally they were just about the right size. In theory, he was happy about this. He loves Star Wars. In practice it was a little more complicated. He was quite upset that Han does not get to have a lightsaber! But more importantly, he hated the hair! I mean, HATED the hair. As the good (albeit slightly obsessed) mom that I am, we skipped 2 haircuts so he would have nice shag do in time for Halloween. Un-coiffed, it looked more “Luke” than “Han”, and the times we tried to style it like Han he just got REALLY upset. So, the brain washing had to begin.
